Thankfully it's only forcing to the 1.5 firmware, which is already cracked - but Joystiq has confirmation of Sony forcing firmware upgrades to play newer games.

But what if the update hadn?t already been cracked? And what if the game had been Grand Theft Auto? Would you be willing to pass up a potentially great PSP game for the sake of SNES emulation? Me, I?d take Kirby Superstar any day of the week.
I tend to agree. I like the PSP being able to run whatever I put on it.
