* DVD Format War Canceled?

PC Games/Hardware/Microsoft
It could be - Sony is talking about trying to create a unified standard for next-generation DVDs in hopes of avoiding a costly format war.

Japan's TDK Corp., Sony and Philips Electronics are part of a large group promoting Blu-ray against a group led by Toshiba Corp. and its HD DVD technology.

At stake is pole position in the $10 billion-a-year DVD player and recorder market, and a similar-sized PC drive market.
Well, they worked out DVD +/- R setups, so I imagine they could get this one right. Hopefully, at least.

I'd hate to have to check whether a DVD was compatible with my player every time I tried to buy a movie, and it would definitely piss off users who aren't technically savvy and bought the wrong one.
