Reviewed: Dragon's Lair 20th Anniversary Boxed Set

Final Breakdown

Gameplay:

The original games featured glorious gameplay, for their time, and it's all preserved.

Graphics:

Dragon's Lair was gorgeous in a time when graphics were blocky and annoying, and still stands toe-to-toe with the best 2D available.

Sound and music:

Perfect preservation from VideoDisc to DVD makes the sound and music stellar, but the cutouts in DVD menu timing quickly get annoying.

AI and Difficulty:

There is no A.I. to speak of, as it's a joystick twitch game, and the solution strings are memorizable (though not without some effort). Unlimited continues do sort of make it easy to beat.

Controls and Interface:

The DVD menu system introduces some funny bumps that take a bit of getting used to.

Overall:

If you're one for nostalgia, grab it and prepare to be frustrated just like you were back in 1983.
