Reviewed: Mortal Kombat: Deception
Author: Michael Ahlf       Date: November 26th, 2004
Page: 3

Final Breakdown

Gameplay:

The gameplay in Chess and Konquest modes isn't bad; the only problem is the traditional memorized-movelist style of Mortal Kombat fighting.

Graphics:

Graphically, MK: Deception is gorgeous, both in scenery and move animations.

Sound and music:

It's a limited soundtrack, but there's nothing to get on players' nerves.

AI and Difficulty:

In Chess and Konquest modes, not so bad. The AI has a tendency to be a bit overzealous, and falls into the traditional traps of being slightly omniscient at higher difficulty settings. The fact that combo strings are strictly defined doesn't help players surprise the AI at all.

Controls and Interface:

Because of the fighting system, you're definitely going to need an arcade stick to play Deception properly.

Overall:

Worth looking into and renting: fans of the old MK series or Tekken will love it, fans of Street Fighter and Soul Calibur likely won't.
