When Activision first put out Spider-Man titles on the Playstation, gamers had decidedly mixed opinions. Some enjoyed the games, but others felt that the games lacked polish, notably in the mobility department. When Spider-Man: The Movie was released, these feelings were confirmed; where the movie itself had shown us a view of web-slinging as an out of control event, the game was a construct quickly slapped together from the older engine. Players couldn't touch ground, could swing from nonexistent objects, and were restricted to a set of highly linear levels.

So, when coming up with a game to be released simultaneously with Spider-Man 2, Activision and Treyarch took the game completely back to formula. Linear levels were, for the most part, completely removed. The fighting system got an overhaul. The web-slinging system was completely redone, with pseudo-realistic physics (read: Spidey can only swing on a web if he can attach it to a physical object) and a feel very close to the movie's depiction of web-slinging as a slightly out of control way to travel.

Finally, exploration and the day-to-day activities of Spider-Man took a larger role. Yes, there are boss battles, and yes, there are chase scenes, but for the most part it's day-to-day crimes; Spidey foils muggings, stops break-ins, intervenes in police shoot-outs, chases down car thieves, and yes, even rescues the lost balloons of small children.

The result is not a perfect game, of course. But it's "good enough", and definitely something worth holding on to. There are times the camera has issues, and there are times that missions seem impossible, but the feeling of just swinging around Manhattan is something that constantly brings players back into the game.
