The performance crown is often a hard thing to acquire; NVidia took forever battling with 3dfx to pull it off, and has since faced stiff competition from ATi in the form of the Radeon line.  This fall, they finally did it, out-performing NVidia's top-line GeForce4 units.

Of course, that might not have meant much to some gamers, and certainly there are some hard-core NVidia fans still. But ATi has a history of making nice products, and in the 2D arena it's hard to find a better-looking card. The 9700 line includes some nice features intended to make video files (DivX, Realmedia, etc....) look a bit better, and of course there's more to the gameplay experience than JUST the framerates a card can push.
